A Singapore-flagged tanker which caught fire off the coast of Johor sunk over the weekend, according to local media.

The MT Kit 57 which caught fire on Saturday morning, was one of two Singapore-registered vessels moored together 1nm south of Pulau Mungging. The unmanned vessel sank seven hours later on Saturday evening.

The MT Kit 57's 18 Myanmarese crew were onboard the MT Sakses Satria 1, which was alongside the stricken vessel. They the mooring ropes after the fire, believed to have started from a short circuit in the engine room, spread to their ship. Two crew who were injured in the incident are warded at Kota Tinggi Hospital.

No oil spill has been detected and wreck marker buoys have been placed. Meanwhile the authorities are investigating to determine if there was any breach in procedures or illegal activities such as ship-to-ship transfers.
