The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), in keeping with the country's Look East Policy, is keen on boosting coastal shipping and transhipment of goods while strengthening the opportunities for trade in the South-East Asian region.

Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand are among the potential areas identified.

According to sources, SCI's aim is to expand trade in the region, which would also ensure there are immense opportunities for ports located in the eastern part of the country.

Given the trade potential, there is a possibility of SCI increasing the frequency of the Yangon service, launched last week, to weekly and adding bigger vessels, up from 1,500 TEUs to 4,500 TEUs.

The Yangon service is expected to boost bilateral trade between India and Myanmar.
