SC Ports container volume up 9 percent

The S.C. Ports Authority reported nearly 9 percent volume growth for the fiscal year through February.

Fiscal year-to-date container volume reached 1.4 million last month, compared with 1.3 million during the same period last year, according to a statement.

Last month, a record 98,259 containers were handled at Charleston, bringing the fiscal year-to-date pier volume to 783,931 containers.

The Inland Port at Greer handled 9,540 containers in February, driving its fiscal year-to-date rail volume 25.8 percent higher than the same period last year.

The Inland Port at Greer has handled 73,205 containers since July.

The authority also broke ground last Friday on its newest facility, the Inland Port Dillon. The first phase will open in the first quarter of 2018 and is expected to handle at least 45,000 containers annually.
