OOCL, a leading international transportation and logistics service provider, once again received the Gold Award (in the service industry sector) at the 2019 BOCHK Corporate Environmental Leadership Awards ceremony held at the head office of Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) on October 5, 2020.  Over 750 participating organizations entered the awards program and OOCL stood out from the competition this year.

OOCL received its first gold award two years ago at the 2017 BOCHK Corporate Environmental Leadership Awards. This prestigious awards program recognizes OOCL’s continuous commitment to promoting environmental and low-carbon best practices in the service industry sector in Hong Kong and the Pan Pearl River Delta region. During the assessment process, OOCL underwent three rounds of review and by a professional adjudication panel and independent assessors.

On behalf of OOCL, Director of Trade Mr. Teddy Fung received the award and remarked: “As a global carrier with our roots deep in Hong Kong, OOCL is very pleased to be acknowledged for our commitment and performance in sustainable development by receiving this remarkable award. OOCL has consistently been engaged with important environmental issues related to our industry, including marine biodiversity and climate change. We will continue to devote our efforts to exploring more opportunities in working together with our stakeholders to tackle tough environmental challenges we face ahead.”

Over the years, OOCL has been proactively initiating various innovative environmental action plans, measures, and policies to address global environmental challenges. The initiatives not only include supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but also green investments on the company’s vessels and development of green IT solutions to help raise the sustainability profile of OOCL to new heights.

The following are some specific projects and initiatives that contributed to the company’s success in winning recognition for its efforts towards protecting the environment:

-    To enhance marine operation efficiency, a state-of-the-art Robo-advisor solution was developed to leverage the latest technologies including the Global Vessel Voyage Monitoring Centre (GVVMC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) developed by OOCL’s sister company, CargoSmart, to optimize for the best sailing routes in fleet operations to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The improved visibility over the operation of the fleet also helps minimize the time ships need to be berthed at port, and the bunker optimization model offers better control over the bunker consumption under different schedule recovery strategies.

-    OOCL has been consistently investing in green technology and equipment in its fleet. The company’s six G-Class vessels, each with a carrying capacity of 21,413 TEU, are performing better than the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) baseline level required by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In addition to the latest environmental friendly features of these ships, other equipment such as scrubbers are selectively installed on its vessels to reduce SOx emissions generated from fuel consumption.
