Oil tanker reported missing off Ghana coast

MT Fair Artemis, a Liberian-flagged oil tanker has been reported missing off the coast of Ghana, A senior port official told the captain sent a distress call to say the vessel was attacked by pirates, reads the report.

"We had a distress call from the master of the ship (Friday) saying he was 36 nautical miles away from our waters after he was hijacked and looted in Togolese waters early Wednesday," a senior official at the port in Tema, east of Ghana's capital, who declined to be identified had told Reuters.

According to the company that owns the vessel, Fairdeal Group S.A, the last time it had contact with the vessel was on Wednesday when it was operating off the coast of Ghana, adding that the ship failed to make contact the next day.

The spokesperson for the company told Reuters that the ship remained missing but gave no further details.

"Our primary concern ... is for the safety of those on board the vessel. We would like to assure their families and all stakeholders that we are fully committed to returning the crew and vessel to a safe port," said Fairdeal fleet director, John Gray.

Ghana's armed forces has said that the Navy were on the lookout for the missing oil tanker. (Source:Seychelles News Agency)
