NWSA TEU volumes Up 0.4% in February

Vessel calls at the NWSA were up 10% in February and up 13% YTD, helping full international exports continue a six-month growth streak, increasing 9.7% over February 2023. Full international imports declined 1.5%, with total international volumes declining 0.5%. February container volumes reached 226,603 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), growing 0.4% over February 2023.

Year-to-date volume comparisons declined 0.2% YTD to 437,887 TEUs, with full imports increasing slightly and full exports growing 14.2%.

In 2018, the NWSA launched a strategic initiative to increase agricultural exports via rail service through an Inland Rail Hub Initiative. The effort has yielded significant positive benefits for the Gateway. The first successful project was the Minot Intermodal Facility at the Logistics Park of North Dakota. In service since 2020, the partnership includes Rail Modal Group, the Minot Area Chamber EDC, and the BNSF Railway.

Domestic container volume decreased 0.6% YTD 2024 compared to YTD 2023. Alaska volumes increased 1%, and Hawaii volumes decreased 7.9%.

Other cargo stats:

-  Total breakbulk volume increased 23.1% for 78,555 metric tons YTD.

-  Auto volumes were 58,185 units, up 20.6%. Consumer demand for automobiles continues to contribute to strong volumes.
