JN Port handles 64.21 mt, 4.25 m TEUs in 2012

Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JN Port) handled 64.21 million tonnes of cargo during calendar year 2012 as against 65.75 million tonnes during the previous year, a fall of 2.33 per cent. Of the total, the share of containerised cargo was 57.78 million tonnes (89.98 per cent), liquid cargo 5.70 million tonnes (8.88 per cent) and the remaining 0.73 million tonnes (1.14 per cent) was miscellaneous cargo in the form of dry bulk and break-bulk.

The Port handled 4.25 million TEUs of container traffic during 2012, as against 4.31 million TEUs in 2011, down 1.41 per cent. Of the total container traffic of 4.25 million TEUs, the share of JNPCT was 1.20 million TEUs (28.19 per cent), that of NSICT 1.09 million TEUs (25.72 per cent), and the remaining 1.96 million TEUs (46.09 per cent) was contributed by APM Terminals Mumbai.

This was highlighted at a trade get-together/cake cutting ceremony organised at the Port Administration Building here on January 2, which was presided over by Mr L. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Heads of Department and senior officials of the Port. Representatives of the trade were present in strength.

JNPCT, the Port's own terminal, handled 1.20 million TEUs (16.08 million tonnes) in 2012, registering a growth of 23.48 per cent in terms of TEUs and 16.70 per cent in terms of tonnes over 2011.
