The Port of Busan has posted a 6.4 per cent year-on-year container volume increase to 8.11 million TEU in the first five months of 2015, according to port authority figures.

Out of the total, 3.92 million TEU were import and export cargo, up 3.6 per cent, and 4.19 million TEU were transshipments, up 9.1 per cent year on year.

In May, port lifted 1.64 million TEU, representing an increase of 3.7 per cent year on year.

The Busan Port Authority (BPA) attributed the growth of the container throughput to the rise in transshipment volumes.

The monthly transshipment cargo volume in March set the highest monthly record by exceeding 1.68 million TEU.

"We will continue our efforts to increase cargo volume at Busan Port by creating high added value cargo through utilising Busan New Port distripark and carrying out various marketing activities to port users including consignors, liners, and forwarders," commented Kang Bu-won, marketing team leader of BPA.(Source: Shipping Gazette)
